personalizing popular items

Oversized Cardigan and a Toque

You know those items that everyone seems to have?

No, I don’t mean a particular “type” of shoe (ex: over the knee boots), or “type” of clothing (ex: blanket scarf). What I’m referring to are very specific items, like the quilted vest from J.Crew, Hunter rain boots, or cocoon sweaters from Aritzia.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t own (or want) many of these popular wardrobe staples. Certain items are popular for a reason, and many have been recently referred to as brands that “basic” people love…myself included. Even though I self-define as basic, I often wonder how to style these items without looking exactly the same as everyone else.

The truth is, most of us put our own spin on styling these sorts of wardrobe staples. Isn’t this why we love reading blogs, browsing our Instagram feeds and Pinning our favourite looks along the way? One of the great advantages we have today is being able to pull inspiration from so many sources.

You definitely have to be able to put your spin on popular, must-have pieces. I love the tough girl vibe this cardigan gets with a beanie and booties. Also- you are made for those Ray-Bans, my friend.

What a great app! I totally agree that there are several ways to style basics that they don’t look the same! I would imagine this app can help with that?

P.s. your outfit looks so cozy! I love it!

The app isn’t specifically designed to inspire new ways to style basics, but I love that it’s a new source of inspiration. Sometimes, when I’m in a bit of a style rut, I like to find new inspiration to hopefully get some new ideas flowing 🙂

SO CUTE! I love how you made the “grunge” look slightly feminine and the color pairings you chose. Here in California, lululemon workout tights are basically our equivalent to your cocoon sweater and I’m always trying to find new ways to wear them!

The app is available in the US (I believe). The store the sweater came from is Canadian, but I know they’ve been expanding into the US, so you’ll see it pop up at some point!

These apps are such a cool concept! And, I’m being totally honest, I had never heard of a cocoon sweater before right now! Lol… Always learning something new. I think style is so personal and that’s what makes us individuals. I love your grunge-y take on this cocoon sweater and the sunnies look great on you!

I think it may be a Toronto or a Canadian thing. Aritzia is hugely popular around here and it’s a part of their line (but they sell other known brands too). I feel like everyone has at least one of these sweaters, so it seems overdone sometimes…except that I love them too.

It’s funny because I wouldn’t even be able to pick anything basic out of this outfit, that’s how well you styled it. You definitely gave it your own personal spin, to the point where it all just blended into a really fun style. I can’t get over how cute that sweater looks with the beanie and glasses- definitely stealing this idea!

Speaking of which, where did you get your sunnies? I need them in my life and quick 🙂

2020 has without a doubt been a year we will all r 2020 has without a doubt been a year we will all remember. It’s been a big rollercoaster, but there’s no one else I’d rather ride it with than @woodley.matt 🥰

We’ve endured so.many.challenges this year...but we’ve also had some of the best and most exciting moments of our lives this year.

I still can’t believe we bought a house, got engaged AND got a puppy this year (all within a month)! 🤯

Nobody knows what 2021 will bring, but what we do know is, it will start the same way 2020 ended: at home.

I also know we will finally be finishing and moving into our new home in early 2021, and I CANNOT WAIT!! As for wedding plans...ehh, it’s a little tricky to plan these days, so we’ll cross that bridge a little later 😜

Wishing you all a safe and happy new year at home! 🥳 (which I’m totally okay with - I’m a 👵🏻 anyways)

I picked up knitting needles for the first time in 10+ years (maybe more?!) at the start of the pandemic. I bought a DIY unicorn kit and it took me months before I got around to finishing it. Still, I enjoyed it.

So, this year, I thought it would be fun to knit up a few gifts for Christmas presents.

My next project? I’m going to attempt to knit myself a cardigan. 🤭😲🤗

Christmas 2020 - like many things this year, not “normal,” but we made plenty of memories.

We had a low-key Christmas morning, filled with Bailey’s coffee, Miller snuggles (and weird facial expressions) and cinnamon buns. We finished off the day with a Jewish Christmas dinner: Chinese take out!

Even though it hasn’t been a “normal” Thanksgiving weekend, there is so much to be thankful for.

One (very) small thing I’m thankful for is that I took Matt’s advice on forgoing my usual butter-only pie crust recipe for one that includes shortening. I used the pumpkin pie recipe from @sallysbakeblog - including the mix of shortening and butter in the crust. I think it was my best pumpkin pie yet!
