Modern Grunge

in Fashion, Outfit Post on 09/11/14

I have some weird tendencies when it comes to wearing anything “new.”

Let’s say I have a new pair of shoes, and a new sweater. I won’t wear the new shoes and the sweater together until I’ve worn them each once, with other items I already have. Before you think I’m nuts, I need to elaborate. I promise there’s a logical explanation!

I love the feeling of wearing something new. We all do! So, if I wore both items together, I’d only have that experience of wearing something new once. By wearing each item separately, you get the “new” feeling twice! It’s basically more bang for your buck.

When it comes to weekend wear, I try to get a little bit more creative with what I do have on hand, rather than “wasting” something new. If I look ridiculous at the drug store, it’s way less of a fashion crime than if I sported a horrible outfit into the office, isn’t it?

For instance, the other day, I gave the whole shirt-tied-around-your-waist-like-it’s-1994 look a try. Of course, I gave it my spin by wearing a floral top (because I love florals). The modern take on grunge is a look I’ll be sporting again this fall…maybe even with a new flannel button down and sneakers. Just, not together.

What I’m Wearing:

Cardigan – American Apparel (Same, Similar)

T-shirt – Aritzia (Similar, Similar)

 Jeans – Black Denim (Similar)

Bag – Roots (Same)

Shoes – Steve Madden (Same, Similar)

Necklace – Crafts&Love (Same)

Do you have any weird tendencies when it comes to wearing something new, or am I alone here?

How cute are you?! I love this look on you–casual but trendy 🙂 I def. have some weird things about new clothes and when I wear them and who sees them the first time before I repeat!

It’s so much less bulkier with that cardigan. I remember tying way oversized hoodies around my waist and I just… can’t… oy. 1990s. Not my best years style wise.

I have strange tendencies too. If I take a tag off prematurely (if I think I’m going to wear something new and then change my mind) I get angry because when I do decide to wear it, it won’t feel new (even if it has never seen the light of day on my body). Yup I guess we are both strange but I’m in good company! This look is so cute and those jeans are perfectly distressed.

This look is so cute – love that top and your outfit would about as much “grunge” as I would wear too 😉 Hmmm…I’ll have to get back to you about any strange tendencies with new items, I’m sure I have them though, Lol.

Ha, you’re definitely not alone! I hate wearing new things together because it makes me feel too much like I’ve shopped in an outfit. Does that make sense? I hate feeling like I’ve purchased clothing in sets, I need to know that I’ve purchased pieces that hold up well enough on their own and with the rest of my closet. If I wear them together first right away, it’s like those clothes won’t go with anything else. It feels almost like a superstition but not LOL

I looove these jeans. I definitely get the idea of not wearing two new pieces at the same time. I actually really like mixing new items with pretty old items or staples. I did that recently with a new graphic tee and “old” reliable black maxi skirt. Have a great weekend!

I used to have some weird tendencies with new clothes. I would wait forever before actually wearing them. I didn’t have a specific reason. I suspect it had to do with the fact that I didn’t want to mess them up? Or I saw my mom do that often so I picked up the habit, too? I’ve since learned to not do that. If I buy something, I should wear it right? haha

“Modern Grunge.” I like it! You look much more feminine than I typically view a grunge look, even when sporting a 1994-era sweater tied around your waist. I so wish that was cool again so I wouldn’t have to carry my sweater everywhere.
