How to Wear Overalls Fashionably

in Outfit Post on 07/05/16

How to wear overalls from Zara

I was born in the 80’s and grew up in the 90’s, so it’s safe to say, this isn’t the first time in my life that I’ve had a pair of overalls. Of course, I’m significantly more fashionable now than I was in the 90’s, but this outfit brings back a lot of memories from my elementary school days. When I wear them, I feel like I need to blast some Spice Girls music and break out my old Sailor Moon dolls! Retro, much?

Since I’m already a fan of flared jeans, 70’s-style peasant tops and yes, vintage levi’s jeans, it was only a matter of time before I bought a modern pair of overalls…or so you’d think.

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t 100% sold when I first tried them on. I had all sorts of thoughts running through my head: Am I too old for these? Are they flattering? Do I look like an 8-year-old? The answer to all of these questions may be yes, but you know what? Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Scroll through for my tips on how to wear overalls fashionably!

Keep the rest of your outfit simple

Don’t over-think the rest of your outfit. If you’re looking for another reason to buy a white t-shirt (or three)…I’ve just given you one.

Wear sneakers or flats

When I was originally putting outfits together with these overalls, I experimented with wedge sandals and pumps. Just no. Try a pair of white Converse sneakers, or better yet, light-up sneakers!

Add minimalistic accessories

If you’re looking for an excuse to wear that delicate necklace, or leather choker, try pairing it with your overalls. It’s those small touches that helps to elevate your outfit from childish to trendy.

Go with a bold lip

Another trick to look like a (fashionable) grown-up in your overalls? Try going with a bold lip! In putting this look together, I felt like something was missing…until I added a swipe of my favourite bright lipstick.

Don’t spend too much

If you’re not sure about the idea of wearing overalls as an adult, why not pick up an inexpensive pair to start with? You can see if you like how you feel in them, before making a big investment.

I’ve always thought I couldn’t wear overalls for all the reasons you stated above! I’ve always LOVED how they look on other people, though, so maybe it’s time to grab my own pair ;).

Just sayin, you totally rock these overalls, girlfriend! Love the bold lip addition. I have to giggle at the fact that the combo of overalls + light up sneakers really reminds me of my childhood, but in the best way – those were the good times, am I right? Super cute!

Haha I know, but it’s all about those subtle changes that make the look more “adult,” right? Regardless, I think it’s a fun look to try on the weekend. Maybe not for the office though 😉

I remember wearing overalls as a kid too! These are so cute! You don’t look like an 8-year-old at all!!! I like how you styled it and those shoes are bad ass!

I thought the same thing too about overalls and eventually they grew on me. I think the adult overalls are more flattering and you just have to find the right pair. I really like the wash and distressed of yours. Great tips too!

Absolutely love this outfit! Like you, I was born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s and so I’ve had a couple in the past. I purchased a pair and they were initially hard to make them look ‘grown up.’ I completely agree with all your points and a nice handbag doesn’t hurt either 🙂 Jess x

You’re sneakers light up, and it’s literally the best thing ever! I totally feel you on the blasting Spice Girls while wearing my overalls. They literally take you to a whole new world.

2020 has without a doubt been a year we will all r 2020 has without a doubt been a year we will all remember. It’s been a big rollercoaster, but there’s no one else I’d rather ride it with than @woodley.matt 🥰

We’ve endured so.many.challenges this year...but we’ve also had some of the best and most exciting moments of our lives this year.

I still can’t believe we bought a house, got engaged AND got a puppy this year (all within a month)! 🤯

Nobody knows what 2021 will bring, but what we do know is, it will start the same way 2020 ended: at home.

I also know we will finally be finishing and moving into our new home in early 2021, and I CANNOT WAIT!! As for wedding plans...ehh, it’s a little tricky to plan these days, so we’ll cross that bridge a little later 😜

Wishing you all a safe and happy new year at home! 🥳 (which I’m totally okay with - I’m a 👵🏻 anyways)

I picked up knitting needles for the first time in 10+ years (maybe more?!) at the start of the pandemic. I bought a DIY unicorn kit and it took me months before I got around to finishing it. Still, I enjoyed it.

So, this year, I thought it would be fun to knit up a few gifts for Christmas presents.

My next project? I’m going to attempt to knit myself a cardigan. 🤭😲🤗

Christmas 2020 - like many things this year, not “normal,” but we made plenty of memories.

We had a low-key Christmas morning, filled with Bailey’s coffee, Miller snuggles (and weird facial expressions) and cinnamon buns. We finished off the day with a Jewish Christmas dinner: Chinese take out!

I’m finishing up the last of the gifting projects and then it’s onto baking cookies! 💁🏼‍♀️

Happy thanksgiving!! 🍂🍁 Even though it hasn Happy thanksgiving!! 🍂🍁

Even though it hasn’t been a “normal” Thanksgiving weekend, there is so much to be thankful for.

One (very) small thing I’m thankful for is that I took Matt’s advice on forgoing my usual butter-only pie crust recipe for one that includes shortening. I used the pumpkin pie recipe from @sallysbakeblog - including the mix of shortening and butter in the crust. I think it was my best pumpkin pie yet!
(The Turkey was fantastic too of course 😏)
