Every family has holiday traditions and for the last 15 years, my family’s tradition has been coming down to Florida over Christmas. I look forward to this trip every year and can’t think of a better way to spend the holidays. Nothing beats sunshine, relaxation, time spent with family…and some killer shopping.
Even though I (obviously) shop year-round, I do some of my best shopping in Florida. I’m not sure if it’s just because of the Christmas sales, but there’s always endless deals on clothes and shoes. I also love to check out new brands and products that aren’t available in Canada. Whenever I wander the aisles of the grocery store or the local Walmart, I get way too excited about even the simplest of products.
I could spend hours walking through Walmart, but one of my favourite parts of the store is the cosmetics section. This year, I’d heard about some new NEUTROGENA cosmetics (not available in Canada) and I knew I had to give them a try. They were lucky to find themselves in a local superstore like Walmart. I’ve heard of a few smaller brands that you can’t find in bigger stores, but are great if you can find them. Some of these are private label cbd skin care and cosmetic products. Hopefully, they will be sold in mainstream stores like Walmart so they are available to a wider customer base soon. If you live in Canada or a place where this isn’t sold, then there are plenty of other options for you.
For example, you could check out this Wholesale Cosmetics store.
One of the products that I picked up was an eyeshadow palate, which inspired me to play around with a smokey eye. The look is more bold than my “everyday face”, so it works well for any holiday party. While I’m not a makeup artist or expert, I’ve always loved makeup and playing with new looks. I have friends who get beauty and skincare subscription boxes, and hearing about the options inside is always exciting. Even if you’re spending a low key Christmas with the family, or New Year’s with a couple of friends, the holidays are a perfect excuse to break out of your makeup routine to try something new.
Creating a statement look for the holidays isn’t as difficult as it sounds. I’ve put together a simple tutorial for how you can easily create a holiday-ready look, using NEUTROGENA cosmetics.
Step 1: Start with clean skin.
Make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser to wipe away impurities, grease, or dirt.
Step 2: Get your “base face” ready.
Before you can tackle your smokey eye, or even apply lipstick, you need to prep your face. This step is necessary to smooth out blemishes or imperfections in your skin and helps bring the whole look together. I like to apply a light moisturizer, tinted CC Cream, foundation and bronzer, but you can get away with moisturizer and a bit of powder. Whatever you’re comfortable with!
Step 3: Time to start playing up your eyes.
To create this look, I used the NEUTROGENA Nourishing Long Wear Eye Shadow + Built-In Primer in ‘Cool Plum.’ To start, I apply the lightest shadow across my eyelid, all the way up to the brow for that highlight effect. You can take the extra step and add a primer to your lids before the eyeshadow, but it’s not necessary. I’ve been playing around with this palate for the last couple of weeks and it lasts all day without creasing or drying out my skin. They claim the color lasts for 12 hours, but I think it may even last longer than that. Whenever I take the time to apply eyeshadow, I need to be confident that it’s going to last throughout the day. Nothing is worse than creasing or smearing, right?
Step 4: Continue layering your eyeshadow.
Next, apply the second lightest color to your eyes, this time covering only the lid.
Step 5: Using the darker colors in the palate, build your smokey effect.
To start building your smokey eye, dab your eyeshadow brush into the second darkest shade in the palate and apply to the outside of your eyelid. Work and blend the shadow into the other colors, but make sure that you don’t cover the entire lid. Next, take the darkest shade and apply to the outer corner of your eyelid, carefully blending it in to achieve the smokey, gradient effect.
Step 6: Line the bottom of your eyes.
Dip an eyeliner brush into the darkest shade on your palate. Run the brush across your lower lash line. This helps to build upon the smokey effect, without making your eyes look smaller (like black pencil can do).
Step 7: Highlight your inner eye.
To make your eyes pop even more, apply a little bit of the lightest eye shadow into the inner part of your eye (near the nose). This step helps make your eyes look bigger and brighter.
Step 8: Add eyeliner across your top lashes.
Eyeliner is a great way to bring more emphasis to your eyes. I used liquid liner to build a simple cat eye, but I recommend that you use what you’re most comfortable with.
Step 9: Apply a couple of coats of mascara.
I have fine, thin lashes, so I start with a couple of coats of the NEUTROGENA Healthy Volume Mascara. Not only does this mascara help to build the volume that I like, but it’s made with a variety of oils that works to moisturize, protect and improve the overall condition of your lashes as you wear it.
Step 10: Add a couple more coats of another mascara you love.
I always mix and match my mascaras, since there’s so many options out there, all offering different benefits. While I love the volume of the NEUTROGENA mascara (it gives 400% fuller lashes!), I like to add a couple of coats of Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara to give my lashes their curl. At this stage, I also like to fill in my brows.
Step 11: Build upon your natural glow.
Next, I apply NEUTROGENA HEALTHY SKIN Blends in ‘Blush’ onto my cheekbones. This is my favourite of the NEUTROGENA cosmetics that I’ve been using! It’s a light-weight blush, but because it also includes a highlight, it instantly gives you a natural, gorgeous glow. It’s so easy to blend it into your skin and leaves your cheeks feeling smooth, since it’s chock full of botanical conditioners.
Step 12: Lips!
Last but not least, use your favourite NEUTROGENA MoistureSmooth Color Stick to give your lips a pop of color (without drying them out). My favourite is “Rich Raisin.” At this time of year, my lips get pretty dry and cracked, so I have to avoid matte lipsticks. The NEUTROGENA MoistureSmooth Color Sticks are made with Mango and Shea butters, which work to condition your lips. I noticed my lips felt generally smoother after wearing this for just a few days.
…and voila!! You’re ready to hit the town to celebrate the holidays or New Year’s Eve. Oh, and don’t forget to break out some sequins!
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about the tutorial. I’m always happy to elaborate!
