Something About That

easy fruit nachos

in Food & Drink on 07/21/15

Yikes – I’m a bit embarrassed about how long ago my last post was!

The truth is, I’ve been wanting to blog, but I haven’t been able to dedicate the time it takes to write quality content, take quality photos and just as importantly, keep up with other people’s blogs. The struggle is so real!

Needless to say, I think this post was worth the wait, because I’m sharing a delicious and healthy summer dessert idea! The inspiration came from a savoury snack that’s a staple in my diet: homemade, baked tortilla chips. They’re so simple to make! All you do is cut store-brought tortilla shells into triangles, spray them with vegetable oil, top with seasoning and bake for about 10 minutes. Easy, healthy and delicious.

Since tortilla shells are neutral in flavour, you can top them with seemingly endless combinations of flavours. Off the top of my head, here’s some ideas: seasoning salt and parmesan cheese, rosemary and sea salt, cayenne pepper, ranch dressing, or cinnamon and sugar.

I’ve made the sweet version of these chips a few times in the last couple of weeks and so far, my favourite way to serve them is alongside fruit salsa. Of course, adding a bit of chocolate to that doesn’t hurt anyone! One of my friends has just bought one of these amazing chocolate tempering machines, so if you have one too you could always use it to enhance the flavour of these tasty treats.

Ingredients:

Chips – Tortilla Shells, Cinnamon, Sugar, Vegetable Oil

Salsa – Mixed Berries, Peaches, Sugar (just a bit), Fresh Basil

Topping – Melted Chocolate

This is where I’d typically share a “recipe”…but you really don’t need one! Think of this as an idea, which I hope you try for yourself. Try making a fruit salsa with your favourite fruits: strawberries? mangos? kiwi?

Let me know if you have any questions!

Fruit is always so good at this time of year, that the more ways I think of to eat it, the better.

Yum, yum! I get a similar snack from this local brunch restaurant, Turning Point. It’s amazing and I’ve never seen it anywhere else! They call it a fruit bruschetta. Thanks for sharing your recipe so I can have it at home, now!

That’s a really cool idea for a brunch restaurant! I’d definitely want that as a side with brunch, now that I think of it 🙂

When I first saw this title, I though you were crazy! And then I actually read the post, and you’re a genius haha. These look unreal! Pairing some type of cinnamon-y chip with fruit and chocolate is a great idea.
